Telehandlers – an alternative to the small equipment market

Mar. 09,2021

Using telescopic loaders in production, agriculture, warehouses, quarries, logistics centers allows you to organize loading and unloading in several shifts, while using only one machine for a wide range of diverse tasks.

Telehandler is a multifunctional machine that can be used for high-altitude loading and unloading, cradle lifting, container stacking, palletizing, etc.

Purpose and classification of telehandlers

A telescopic loader is a universal multifunctional special equipment of various carrying capacities with a retractable boom equipped with a mechanism for quick attachment change. They are used in loading and unloading, installation and repair and high-altitude work, in the public utilities sector, in agriculture for fodder and harvesting, and in other economic sectors.

These machines are classified according to the following parameters:

  • appointment;
  • frame and chassis structures;
  • reach of the telescopic boom;
  • drive type;
  • load capacity.

Rigid or articulated frame telehandlers are mounted on wheels or tracks. However, to improve the cross-country ability of vehicles on some wheeled models, it is possible to install innovative tracked systems. The working radius and load capacity of such a mechanism depends on the number of sections of the retractable boom. For many models, the outreach of the telescopic boom, powered by a hydraulic or chain drive, can be more than 20 meters, and the load capacity is from 3 to 7 tons.

The design of telehandlers

Most machines have a diesel engine located on the side of the frame. A lifting boom is installed between it and the operator’s cab. This arrangement lowers the center of gravity, which gives the machine stability, to improve which loaders are equipped with outriggers. To increase functionality, many models have a mechanism for changing attachments at the end of the boom. Manufacturers of special equipment optionally complete telescopic loaders with such interchangeable tools:

  • pallet forks;
  • agricultural grabs for hay, logs and bales;
  • mounting cradles for work at height;
  • buckets of various modifications;
  • hook hangers;
  • snow dumps;
  • wheel pullers for mining dump trucks;
  • cleaning brushes.

The operator controls the telescopic loader from an ergonomic cab with panoramic windows for a better overview of the work site. Manufacturers equip these machines with systems that protect against falling loads, compensating devices that control the stability of the loader during operation, and sensors that signal the excess weight of the load being lifted. For the convenience of working in the cab, an adjustable seat, an air conditioner and a panel with control joysticks and a liquid crystal display are installed, where all the operating parameters of the machine are displayed.

The high user demand for telehandlers is due to their versatility. They perform a large front of work and quickly cope with the task. The advantages of these machines include a large working radius and good visibility, the ability to quickly change attachments, high maneuverability and throughput due to all-wheel drive, efficiency and convenience for the operator.

what to look for when choosing

In order to choose the right loader, you must first decide what functions it will perform for you and under what conditions you will have to work, based on this information we will proceed to select options based on several criteria.

When working in high-rise facilities or multi-storey warehouses, the height to which a machine can lift a load is one of the most important indicators.

The second important factor is the maximum mass of the load being lifted, the bigger the better, the load varies in weight, shape and construction, a good power capability of your unit will have a positive effect on the work.

Special equipment, hydraulic systems, and powering pumps can seriously affect productivity. It depends on how quickly they can expand and assemble the boom and the maneuverability of the attachments. In addition, they also affect fuel consumption, which is now not at all happy for its price.

The cab must be spacious and have a good view, and the operator spends a lot of time in it, so the comfort of work must be considered.

The size of your future assistant will matter if the execution of his tasks is limited to a certain area, or if the area is filled with some objects, in which the car will have to move.
